Wow, 20-21mpg is terrible for a 330i - is that with the N52 engine? My 530i (6 spd manual) gets 24-27mpg (US) like clockwork - I used to keep a spreadsheet so I know. That is on my driving cycle, not some cherry-picked long trip or something.

Ahhh - so an M54. That explains it. The newer engine (N52) is better with gas.

I'd go for the V8 as you can always drive a little slower if you want the same feeling as a 530i 
In terms of the handling I'd say the difference would be marginal. I have a diesel version which is heavier at the front but still handles like a proper spots sedan. Whatever you get you'll get used to it.
