Did you put the flap control rod and back in along with connecting the vaccum pipe and connectors, I would check my connections in that area there are 2 connectors and 2 vac pipes (1 vac to the unit and 1 on the unit to the unit). I dont think the rail pressure reg valve is related as that is for the fuel system, you dont have tuning box plugged in do you? I had one on my volvo that I had to remove casue of a similar error.
Yes, control rod and vaccum pipes were all reconnected, and no, I don't have a tuning box fitted.

I disconnected/reconnected the rail pressure reg. valve in the process of removing the manifold - would that happen to warrant any form of reset?

If it was my car, I would reset the codes and see if they come back. I assume that you disconnected the battery neg terminal when you removed all this.

Fingers crossed.

H'mmmm! No I didn't disconnect the negative terminal - would that have made a difference? (Sorry, not too tech minded when it boils down to it, and many thanks for your help).

That might be it. The car is alive when battery is connected and might register the things that happen with doors, connections etc...
By the way, after I removed my flaps, I also read the error codes to at the dealer, and there was nothing.

Oh Dear! So is the obvious answer to try and do a reset?

I haven't tuned the car in any way and the car always had regular maintenance at the BMW dealer. I will get legal advice through my insurance company and see what they can do.
I will post further info.
Hi RobyO,

I own a Belgian registered 530d, 2005 new, now with 125kkms and I fear the same thing has happened to me. I've just started my negotiations with the BMW dealership here in Brussels on the strength of your very helpful comments. I also cannot understand that BMW did not make a recall for such a thing, I mean such a small component ingested into the engine causing, probably, complete engine failure.

How did you fare out with the BMW dealership? Did they pay for most/all of the work?. The initial offer from BMW BeLux is 60% coverage on parts only. I've refused and want a far better deal.....

Appreciate any feedback you might be able to give.....

Cheers!

So sorry to hear about that . Welcome to the forums anyway!

I'm not sure about RobyO's answer, since he hasn't been online since 7th April. After you have made couple of posts on the forum you will be able to send him private mail if you wish. There's a bit better chance to get his reply that way.
Good luck with the issue

This is for "compression tests, removing the inlet manifold, turbo pipes, removing cylinder head and inspecting, cylinder head gaskets, and refitting of the cylinder head if no further work is required circa 10.6 hours plus parts minus 10% discount plus VAT = ?1250."

Would anyone have a view if this is appropriate and reasonable?
In other forums I have read about figures for this at about ?600 (also for a 530d) and ?700 (for a 320d) - same diagnosis for the same reason.

I have the feeling that my dealership is simply milking me - as a customer with this issue they have you standing with your back against the wall.
BMW UK requires the full diagnosis to be performed before they can take any decision on goodwill.

I would appreciate if anyone would have some comparisons for me!!

Also I would be interested to know if anyone has ever taken any legal action against BMW?
This - as the various forum discussions confirm - is clearly an engineering fault. And the design of the swirl flaps was changed by BMW (no more metal parts involved that are the root cause regarding potential need to replace the engine in case of failure...)... and the manufacturer is liable for engineering/manufacturing faults well beyond the warranty period.

Many thanks for some views and hands-on experience with this!!

Stephan
