Hi Secretcomp.
I have few questions for you.
Does it sound like it`s a diesel?
Does the sound goes away after the car runs for 15-20min?
Do you hear that sound when the RPM is over 1500?

I guess i have the same problem on my E60 530i. I`ve been to BMW Brian Jessel in Vancouver today for a recall and i mentioned about this noise too.
After 8 hours...i got the car back and the result was "noise not heard at this time". Well...i hat the get the technician and the SA out, to prove that there is a freaking noise (pretty good guys, nothing to say about them).
They pointed 1000 possible problems but nothing about the water pump (maybe i should mention that to these guys). Also they told me to go back there this Friday, because the shop foreman will be there and he will have a quick look. I guess he`s kind of a Harry Potter in that shop.

Btw, i can tell you that the pulley is not at fault. I changed the pulley few months ago, and i`m still getting that noise. The thing is, after it gets warmed up the noise disappear. Also, when i push the gas the sound goes away. The sound is constant...It`s like you hear it for 5 sec and it goes away for 5.

I have the same problem, same exact noise. One thing that I have noticed is that when it stops and im in my garage and I turn the wheel slightly to the left or right it comes back momentarily. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

What`s the mileage on your cars? Mine has 143000km.
My buddy told me that it might be the timing chain. I hope he`s wrong!

I'm thinking the same thing. A mechanic's stethoscope ought to help isolate the source of the noise.
