You're all wrong. Pre-16.2 or so, it never go to 6th in DS, but after having 16.2 installed, DS goes to 6th.

What is "SOS" and "TCU" stand for and what have been the issues?

The issues are that lots of people have had software/iDrive problems that have only been solvable by BMW replacing the car computer (TCU) at enormous cost, sometimes multiple times. Fine because everyone is still under warranty, but won't be so fine afterwards.
As far as I'm concerned as soon as you say manual shift u are no longer using DS. When I say DS it is hands off, so auto shifting up and down all the way. When I move shifter in either direction then I go to a M# and that is not DS.
Yes, that's is the way I understand/use the terminology also. While I didn't provide a quote, I was thinking that my530i might be using the termonology differently than the rest of us. Earlier, he said:
I tested my car pretty thoroughly today. No luck getting DS to shift to 6th no matter which I did. I did not try to duplicate wowe's red-line in 5th deed.
