Here's how I routed the wires from the main V1 unit to the direct-wire power adapter (which is hardwired in the overhead console by the map lights), and to the concealed display in front of the MPG gauge. I started at the overhead console and worked toward the concealed display, but suggest starting at the concealed display, so you know you'll have the perfect amount of wire at that end (I lucked out!).

I used a plastic putty knife from Home Depot to wedge the wire between the interior trim pieces. Push with slow, steady force and you'll end up with no wires showing.
Wedge the wire between the headliner support and roof, then down the a pillar:
Attachment 5496
Then between a pillar and dash:
Attachment 5497
Then between wood trim and dash:
Attachment 5498
And finally above steering column to the concealed display. The pic is with the steering wheel all the way down to show wire (it isn't visible when steering wheel is in driving position):
Attachment 5499
Is your concealed unit hard wired also or does it plug into the radar detector?

I installed my Valentine One this weekend. While it now works well, there may have been some wiring changes to E60/61s since jksanford installed his V1 in his 2004 E60 on May 1, 2004.

The problem I encountered may be due to differences between my Jan 2006 build E61 and the 2004 E60 of jksanford. In the event, I found two Green-Yellow wires:

1) in the bundle going to the rain sensor,
2) in the bundle going to the sun roof switch.

  • With a 50/50 chance, just my luck, I guessed wrong. I attached the Pos Terminal of the V-1 to the Green-Yellow wire that went to the sun roof switch.
  • When I tested the connections, the V-1 did not wake up. The wire appears to carry about 2.2 volts and have some sort of control functions over the extended sun roof in my '06 E61.

  • I used the same grounding screw as jksanford: screw came out very easily (carefully) using an appropriately sized (10 mm) socket wrench (wench?)
  • I fired up the car, and all worked well ? with the second connection - with NO warning lights or error codes.
  • I had been concerned about 'stuffing' space for the extra wires in the overhead compartment. I should not have been. There is plenty of space forward, next to the windshield.
radar det-dsc_1496.jpg
  • I mounted the Valentine One to the right of the mirror, and as high as I could. The right seat passenger can open the Sun Visor as much as she 'who shall be obeyed' needs.
I put my EZPass below the V1.
  • I plan to drive the car a bit before I decide if I need to install a remote ? la Stream.
Thanks to all who went before ? Don Juan, jksanford, Stream et al.

JDN-Do you have it hardwired? Did you do it yourself? Any complaints, concerns, or comments???
Sorry, I missed this earlier. Only comments are that the rain sensor bundle that Hopco showed today is the best way to go because it is always hot when the ignition is on. Another comment is to be sure the ground is good and tight and that the blue connector supplied by Valentine "bites" through for good contact with the hot wires.

I have never heard of this one, is it a laser jamer as well as a radar detector?

Ok, so I'm trying to figure out what wire to tap, but without a wiring diagram, I'm pretty lost (and stripping each wire to check w/ a voltmeter doesn't sound like much fun). So the story goes like this: 2004 build date. If you check out thepicture, you can see my wiring looks a bit different from the ones previously shown here. As you can see, I've tried tapping a few wires, but had no luck (the yellow one w/ a green stripe goes to one of the switches on the headliner).

Any ideas on what color my switched 12v power would be? Thanks.

Complete at last. In May I installed the Valentine One high and to the right of the mirror in my E60. It was a great location for semi-stealth, but the display was not easy to see or make a regular part of my instrument scan.

I had a remote display (one of the old one's from the mid-1990s) that was smaller than the one Stream had used ? see above. I tried to wire it myself ? la Stream, but chickened out when trying to push the wire behind the wood trim in Stream's install photos (See third photo post #78 ? above). Last week I took the car to my dealer. Yes, it was an hour of shop time, but rather that than screw up the dash. The mechanic who installed it, per Steam's instructions, said I had done the hard part ? wiring the Valentine One itself ? double thanks to Don Juan and Stream!

My small old remote has neither a volume control nor LEDs that light ? but as you can see it is a lot smaller ? and as an added plus I can still see the ever so important MPG gauge.
radar det-adhesive_plastic_clips___adhesive_backed_cord_clips.jpg
I also found some black adhesive backed wire clips on Google (ITW Fastex 8511-28-00 Blk). I used three to hold the phone wire underneath the shelf of the dash ? see the inset in the photo above.

I have some extra clips, and I would be happy to send 4 clips to anyone who PM's me to get my address and then sends a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE).

I have a 2007 530xiT and could not find the +12V line. I saw the yellow w/ green stripe wire leading to the moonroof but that wasn't right--checked it. I looked in the wrap of wires going to the rain sensor and there were no green w/ yellow stripe wires. Anyone have any idea which wire supplies the +12VDC that coincides with the ignition for '07 builds?

thanks,

-D

I would like to know this also. I was planning on hard wiring my 07 525i tomorrow and assumed all builds were the same, but now am glad that I didn't try yet

I plan to hardwire my Escort 8500 and really appreciate all the suggestions/instructions posted in this forum. Given that the Escort 8500 uses a RJR11 cable how would one splice and attach the really small guage wires from this cable to the car's wiring?

Could someone that has hardwired an Escort share what they used for their installation?

Thanks in advance.
