Some claim that the tint strip cuts down on the performance of the detector. Perhaps the HUD windshields don't have the tint strip

My Ride: 2005 545i with everything
Thanks for the good how-to. I installed a V1 in my E46 and now that I have my 545i I was eager to get it installed again. I chose to place the V1 to the right of the rearview mirror after being frustrated on a regular basis in my E46 with not being able to use my sunvisor because of the V1 being on the drivers side.
The only hiccup I ran into with this installation is the wiring is a smaller guage than that blue V1 clip is designed to tap into so I was getting a very intermittent connection and had to use plyers to squeeze the metal prongs a little closer together to get it to bite into the wire more to give a better connection.
It always makes me sweat to pull apart my expensive cars to hook this thing up, but it's not hard to do and it sure makes life easy for the life of the car to have a hardwired V1!

[/quote]You are exactly right on the HUD/no tint strip. Select one option - cannot get the other. My V1 is at top of windshield (with HUD). Tested at all positions and found no discernable difference, at least for radar. Cannot speak to laser as I've not detected any in my area. But I know unit does detect as I was in Maryland with this V1 (and a different car) and it certainly alerted me there

I have also added a tinted strip on the top of the windhield to hide the V1 a bit better and to protect it from the sun. From the outside the V1 looks like part of the car..
