How many people out of warranty have had the MP3 function enabled for free. I'm taking my car in tomorrow for my heated seat that went up in flames a couple of weeks ago, and oil change, and hopefully a free mp3 retrofit.

What do you guys think are my chances?

On such early build none, if you don't have Navigation (CCC).
It's not the software but more on the hardware.

Just an update...I'm going to order the iPod kit from Garry up in RI today. Since the company that makes the spec.dock is based in Atlanta I gave them a call about getting that installed also. I explained to the owner my situation and he is willing to install the iPod kit and the spec.dock for free. So my total cost for the whole set-up will be:

$241 (iPod kit + shipping) Thanks Garry
$189 (spec.dock OEM specific) Thanks 2point5
$0 (installation ) Thanks Matt from 2point5

For a grand total of $430. That is $162 less than what my dealer quoted me and the iPod/iPhone would have to be stuck in the glove box

Can't wait to get it all set-up and a big props to 2point5.com for making it possible.
John- Ok, the Ipod kit is what allows the iPod to be read by the factory stereo, correct? If so, then what is the purpose of the spec.dock?

Others- Will CD1 for example, read all my playlists or is there a limit the number of lists it will read? I would prefer to use a system that allows me to control all music directly from the iPod. What would I need for that?

Thanks fellas.

Don't understand why you would want to control the music from the iPod. It's unsafe. Especially since you can control everything via the multifunction buttons on your steering wheel.

You can get that feature with the Dension Gateway 500. There's an option to select IPOD User interface, where you can have someone in shotgun control the ipod via IPOD shuffling or selecting songs as oppose to selecting songs with idrive. Really great feature because it enables Pandora (Internet radio) for my Iphone 3g onto my car.

Schulrog.
I have a 530i with NO Nav, No CDC. Will this kit work for me. As I understand it's the hardware that won't allow me to play mp3. So can I still take it to the stealers and ask for the mp3 retrofit? I called several alredy and they all said the same thing, my mp3 won't work because mine is not CCC. I'm out of warranty and would like to know how to go about it. HELLLLLLPPPPPPP!!!

As far as I know people without CDC and without NAV (MASK) have done this retrofit... anyone want to jump in on this?

I'm one of them. Car is 2004, 12/03 built. NO NAV, NO CDC. iPod kit runs perfectly. Car STILL does not play MP3. Car may need to be at least a 09/03 built from what I understand.

(I would love for someone that has an tested MP3 cd to send me one to know for sure, but I followed the MP3 DIY and it does not work)
