I bought a set of M6 mirrors from 540a,and everything work beside autofold. I had the bmw dealer look at it to see if reprograming was needed. But no luck. I also noticed that the M6 mirrors had an extra wire 'yellow wire' in the connectors. I looked up a wiring diagram, and found out the extra wire' was for the auto fold motor/power? So my question to you guys is,can I just make an external switch to auto fold these mirrors? If so, do i need a relay or do i just need to tap that wire to an power source (12v?).Please let me know if anyone one has tried to power up or tested that wire' ? I really need to figure this out asap because its seems more complicated than it is.

My car is Pre-2005 so I do have door modules.
Any ideas guys,please chime in??

12V worked for me. I'm still playing with this so don't know where to draw the power from yet. But I'm hoping I can get that via the mirror power itself.
If u use the mirrors power source, then what are your options to be able to switch the power on and off? How would one be able operate it?

I think what he is trying to do is get power from the main switch, then tap power over to the auto fold wire. And from there you can make ur own switch for the fold or work the mirrors ?

I wonder how this could be done so it would not look out of place.

This is why I'm still thinking about this. My initial thoughts are to find a space on the switch panel itself for the switch. But if I want it to look good - its got to be done well.

Bruce is there any way for the folding option to tap into the mirrors power source and activate it through maybe two switches.
For example: holding up the drivers side and rear of passeger window switch simultaneosly to activate the switching.

Another question, does the mirrors need to be grounded at all for the folding option to work?

The switches on your switch panel are doing nothing but issuing out CAN instructions on the BUS so unless you are about to design an interface that can understand CAN IDs and then trigger the auto-fold then - No you cannot simply use two switches.

Don't understand the question about grounding. All electrical devices need grounding to work - but BMW choose to wire them and the ground them only at the grounding points in the car.

Ok. So if I were to take both the power fold wires from each mirrior, and connect it to an external switch...and tap it to the car's power supply(12v) soure. Will I be able to work the mirror that way?

Hi Guys,

had to do this for the group buy guys, so i thought I might aswell add this to the DIY section.

As to the mod itself - would i do it? Yes I would. It looks great. Obviously a plug/play would be to take LCI mirrors but considering the amount i save if I had bought it from the dealer (1200 EUR MORE than what we paid for this group buy), I am happy with the extra bit of work (of fitting a non-lci mirror on a lci car)...

One more thing: guys - you are old enough to be held responsible for what you do, so don't hold anything against me. This dyi is just a fyi.

thanks

Rumman

Looks a bit complicated, I have the same M5 mirrors on mine and I transferred them from my previous 525i to the 530i LCI with no problems. Just plug and play.
