My solution is for auto-fold is not going to be an elegant one - but it should work. It certainly is not one like the actual solution i.e. get the switch panel changed and get dealer to reprogram the car. I'm not going to be able to reprogram the car etc to add the auto-fold feature, beside I thought that dealers in the US wont program the auto-fold on to pre-LCI cars anyway.. All I'm doing it creating a circuit to power up the folding motors and then triggering that manually from inside the car.

I dont think that cars after 09/2005 have door modules, they use a LIN bus and thats directly connected between the ECU in the mirror and the gateway module (and switch panel).

Bruce,

I did straight swap from std mirror to mirror I got from 530dA w/o problem the only thing I did was I re-use the plastic ends of the wire loom from the std mirror 'cuz they were slightly different and whatever features I had from the std mirror works, I then re-wire the led puddles to the door light and you're right no door modules on mine...

I'm looking forward for your soon to be folding 'trick' for the mirror

I've been playing with a set of M5 mirrors recently and had a question rsyed.

Before you started this major project did you actually try just putting the mirror on your car and seeing what happens? Why did you assume that the ECU on the LCI car was different from a pre-LCI car.

In step 5 why are you cutting the 3 wires from the ECU that are connected to the plug. I can understand needing to cut the wires that heat the mirror. The reason I ask is because in Step 7 your connecting the cut wires back to the old LCI ECU anyway?

Also does anyone know if you didn't have electro dimming mirrors on your original car does it magically start working if you fit an M5 mirror that has the dimming feature. Ofcourse I'm talking if you dont replace the ECU from the M5 mirror and keep everything as is.

I think the dimming feature tied to the cabin rear view mirror, right? 'cuz the door mirror itself has no sensor so I think if one upgrade from standard cabin rear view mirror w/ the one that at least auto-dim it will work (provided that there maybe some extra wire require).

So Bruce here the answers:

1) No i did not just try putting the mirror into my LCI car because the plugs were different. I did not think that just cutting off the plug and replacing it with a LCI plug would do the job? why would bmw do that (change plugs from one generation to the other)?

2) i had to cut 3 wires instead of 2 only because you can not otherwise take the ECU out of the housing.

3) i did not have electro dimming mirrors, yet i fitted them with my m5 mirrors - did not work (tnx god: i dont like mirrors dimming in the dark)...

hope i was able ot help

I still dont understand point number 2.

You cut the wire from your original mirror going to the ECU but then you join it back to the same ECU again when you put it into the M5 mirror. Thats the bit I don't understand. Why can't you take the ECU out of the housing without cutting the wires out. Wouldn't it have been easier to simply remove the pins from the plug and route the wire out of the housing if the plug was what was causing the issue.

Bruce,

That was exactly what I did, the mirror from 530dA came w/ plug that has 4-pin slot but w/ only 3-wires and the std mirror also has 3-wires w/ 3-pin slot plug but all 3 wire colors are identical so I used small needle to unlock the pins from the plug housing then pull each wire out slowly one by one and swap the plug housing keepin' the ECU & all the wires inside intact.

Very ideal solution

You have to cut the wire so that you can get the wire with the plug out out of the housing. Yse, you could have removed the pins from teh plug but I really did not figure out how that was going to happen. I really cant remember thinking that this was an option (disconnecting the plug) - it did not seem that simple to disconnect..

Do you know how much power does the source need to have for the folding function to work? Also, what switching power source do you think is the likely candidate to source this connection?

12V worked for me. I'm still playing with this so don't know where to draw the power from yet. But I'm hoping I can get that via the mirror power itself.
