No at the one year low milage change they shouldnt re-set the lights I'm told...
8000miles? Huh? I was giving a hypothetical question... so if your car is 1 year old as of today and never made an oil change before but the count down timer shows 4000 more miles that means you are eligibal for a free oil change today... but then if they dont reset the timer then you'll be eligibal for another one in 4000 miles!

What would they do if say I hit 1 year now but I have about like 4000 miles more to count down? will they change it now and then change it again in 4000 miles?

Really they should reset it everytime they changed the oil, is your source confirmed?
You mean with 4000 miles left on the service indicator, I get it now. Yes if you have 4000 miles left they should reset it, I thought you are refering to the ODO.
Yes my SA told me, go in and change the oil either when the car told you to or 1 year after purchase and they will reset the mileage everytime. If they didn't then a free oil change
My countdown timer begins at 24000 km, I have driven 3500 km so far and the countdown timer is now at 15000 km which mean I am due for a service at 18500 km not 24000 km. The new system will change according to your driving style. Hope this clear up some confusion.

When I first got my 2005 545i SMG, I noticed that the miles for Service did not count down at all.
I drove 15,000 miles, and the car still said I had 14,000 miles left until oil change.
I took the car to the dealer, and they did the oil service and a software update.
Now the miles are ticking down correctly, however I am worried about something.
Since the car did not tick any miles for the first 15,000 miles, does that mean that my brake pad indications are now off by 15,000 miles? They are ticking down now, but started at the same number as they were at when I took delivery. Now I'm at 20,000 miles, and I'm wondering if I need to get the pads checked by someone because the car's service computer is out of sync.
Or, does the service computer have sensors in the brakes that detect the levels of the pads and suggest maintenance that way? Or is it just a mileage counter that assumes brakepads last a certain number of miles?

Well for my MINI they didnt... I went in first year for a low milage 1 year oil change and they didnt reset the timer. And then after the timer finished it was another like 7 months later and I got another oil change. But that was when the timer still had like 7000 miles left to count down. (*I didnt drive it much the first year and a half*) SO the source is really just me...
Wondering if anyone else had the same experince...

My problem it's the opposite. I drive a lot and in the next 2 months i will have to change rear brake pads (8.000 kms from now), the oil (12.000 kms from now), the rear brake pads (23.000 kms from now), habitacle filter (28.000 kms from now) and the brake system oil before 04/06.... Car came yesterday from a recall to exchange the exhaust manifold. And i want to do a software update.... Can you see how many days i can't use the car due to the maintanence... the car was stopped in maintenance/recall 15 days since day 1.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
BEWARE: BMW requires 250 miles per month to keep many things in warranty coverage (read: battery, etc.) I know, I just had to have battery replaced on my new 04, and I had to pay for it (at my local dealer, not selling dealer) because of that caveat. I fully expect the selling dealer to reimburse me, but be careful; these things are made to RUN.
