I have an '05 545 that I purchased last Feb. I drive it only to and from work, and consequently have only put 5,000 miles on it so far. I am thinking ahead to February, when the car will be a year old and probably have 7,500 miles on it. That is half the miles the car thinks it can go before changing the oil. However, I just don't think it is right to let the oil changes wait for years just because the milage isn't high enough yet.

My question is- if I request an oil change at one year but only 7,500 miles, will this be covered by the maintenance plan, or will my dealer try to make me pay for it myself? Anyone had a similar experience?

I appreciate your insight and experiences...

BMW usually will pay for the change at one year, even if you're not to 15,000 miles yet. Some have had this doen free of charge, but other dealers might try and charge you for it. I had mine changed early as well, though it was prior to the one year anniversary and the charge was around $80, including oil and labor.

sleepdoc,

BMW's policy is one year or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. My friends have an '05 525i and with 11,000 miles at the end of one year, they were instructed to bring the car in for an oil and filter change (at BMW's expense).

When I had my 2000 540ia, the policy was 2 years! I called at the one year mark and they laughed at me saying to wait for the light.

2 years!! That's ridiculous! All we are trying to do is take good care of our cars- we're not asking for a free oil change every 2 weeks...

BMW policy is earlier of one year or when the mileage computer (approximately 15,000 miles) says it's time for a change. In fact, the oil service screen on my 2006 530xiT shows both mileage and the one year date.

It should be one year or 15,000 miles whichever first, two year is ridiculous.

That's 8000 miles, of course they are not going to change it. Plus after the change they will reset the miles or lights on the E39.
