Dealer can cancel individual keys. There are total of 10 keys that could be made at the factory for any BMW. Usually, 4 or 3 keys come with the new vehicle - 1 or 2 master keys, vallet key, and spare plastic emergency key. That may have changed in the last few years since I have not bought "brand new" BMW in some time. If you loose one of the keys, dealer can order one for you in Germany, and that is the only place it could be made, that is why it will take ~7 days to get it, and will cost you $100-150. Dealer can cancel lost key for you as long as they know which one is lost.

Knox is right. The Dealer can order a total of only 4 remotes and 9 keys to one VIN number. Yes 9 keys... as in the metal "laser cut part" and only 4 remotes. Dont ask me why. I just know that that's the case. and yes When you lose the key you lose the remote too so *Shrugs*

Seeing as I just purchased 2 new keys myself, I can tell you that the dealer will tell you it's just under $200. You can normally work a 10-15 discount. Thankfully I don't have the fob, but the older key. My damage was closer to 120 a key. Hopefull you can get a cheaper price.

What about the security issue ... the dealer might have to reprogram all the keys so that the lost key can't be used. One of my friends told me that a lost key on his merc cost him 800$ by the time he had new keys reprogrammed.
