Oh come on man! Direct competitors, indirect competitors...who gives a E$#@? If the X6 will be able to steal away clients like you silver bullet then what's that called?
Imo 545iBMW hit the nail on the coffin (or so it seems). I agree completely.
PS: I've just been informed by my dealer that there are over 100 X6 orders in progress and the car hasn't been launched yet here (end of May).

The X6 is more likely to cannibalize sales from BMW itself than from Porsche.

2006 BMW X3
I cretainly feel the X6 competes with the X5, Cayenne, the Infinity FX, and others. If one cross shops between them, simply choose the one that gives the level of performance, handling, room, & utility that one needs for whatever price one is willing to pay. Of course as mentioned, brand loyalty plays a part. It would take a significant difference in performance, handling, utility, etc to sway some buyers to another brand.
Obviously the X6 isn't about utility. BMW has the X5 (or X3) for that. The X6 is about sportyness and driving feel.
BTW, I saw my first X6 in person at Flow BMW. It was one of the loaded red Xdrive 35i launch models. It looked better than in pictures but still strange and "too big" from some rear angles. The interior was nice but not as roomy in the rear as the X3 & X5 (but close and still better than any coupe). The biggest downside was the poor rear visibility and relative price & bulk for vehicle you get compared to the X5. One has to want the extra performance/handling of it and OK with the sacrifice of utility over the X5. Although I would need to test drive it (and others) to truely form my own opinion.
