My Ride: (E60) 535D M-Sport (DMS)

My guess that noise is more down to the zorst than the engine.

AMG as we all know is comparable to the Bimmer M's so that car is a performance diesel & will be amrketed as such & will no doubt have some trick sports zorst. Perhaps if BMW made a 545D with a V8 diesel & made an M545D model, things would be different or even an M535D

The 535D is marketed as a diesel & the M-Sport as a sportier diesel, but it aint marketed as a true performance diesel although it actually happens to have excellent performance character.

Having always owned petrol cars prior to me 535D, i think the engine & zorst note is feasably petrol like, you can just about tell it's a diesel, but my wifes car is an 18mth old Passat TDI & that sounds positivley tractor like in comparison to mine.

Another point is actually how quiet the 535D is, with my previous stead, the wife could here me approach from almost a mile up the road (had sports cats & zorst) however i can park behind the house in the Bimmer & she's no idea i've arrived home (not caught her up to no good yet )
