I think diesels sound like shit, bmw's, merc's or any other diesel.
But i think thats about the only disadvantage of a diesel and maybe the low rpm which might be a little less exciting. Further more diesels have lots of advantages so i hope i didnt insult anyone.
it is not anymore a diesel sound, actually when stopping at lights you feel like wanna restart the engine -it is now with the new diesels of BMWs are like Lexus, really. But when you step on it or shifts back that is the fun factor, a real nice vrrrooom. NOTE that this is my 1st ever diesel car, and plz do a favour do not compare this German Masterpiece to nor MERZ no other German craps... VW

No offence to Peter but X5 is a truck not like e60 a sedan, there you have no diesel sound... otherwise I wud not buy it, and here in B the diesel cost less than petrol I am so happy

Part is true but the rest isn't. I agree that compared to a petrol they sound worse, it's normal. But an E60 diesel is so refined and make such a beautifull noise when revved up (for a diesel compared to other diesels), more like an american V8. Hell if those diesels would make a better noise than a petrol, wich imo it's virtually impossible, than what would be the point of petrol cars in general. Anyway if one want more sound from a diesel bmw he can always change the exhaust and get even more plesant sound. And no, low rpm is waaaay more exciting than in a petrol. If your in low rpms in a petrol bmw you hardly get any move but i already have at my disposal from around 1000-1500rpm 500 NM of torque. So if that isn't exciting then...i rest my case.

I'd rather have a 535d - it's faster AND bigger AND the engine sounds fine to me....

As you probably understood i was comparing the sound of a diesel to the sound of a petrol car. And in that comparison the diesel sounds like shit. And even an E60 diesel. An exhaust wont change much about that. And about the rpm, i didnt mention the excitment at low rpm, i meant the diesel is not capable of high rpm. Cause i think a "yelling" engine at 7500rpm is much more exciting than having to change gear at 5000rpm. But again, this is just my opinion.

No doubt at all that petrol sounds MUCH better than diesel - especially for that high revving sports car sound...

However IMO BMW's petrol engine note is generally much finer and quieter than rivals

BMW 6 cylinder diesel engines sound very un-diesel though.... quite refined really, just not as refined as a 6 cylinder petrol........

Best engine note........... TVR - they sound NASTY.

Of course it's not capable of 7500 rpm it's only capable of 4700-4800rpm. What diesel would that be... But i feel that you're more talking about outside noise than inside. Inside i really like it. Not that i'm dieing for it's sound but it's not disturbing at all. It quite dark and heavy tone, like a screaming bear . But i bealive that an exhaust would make it sound even better inside.

PS: And would you care that much if it sounds a bit worse but it would destroy a 330i or 530i and still come more economical ? (I did this afternoon, a 330xi).I mean we are not talking about m5 sound after all wich is to die for.

U might be right about the bmw diesel sounding better than any other diesel. But i think bmw petrol engines also sound better than rivals. Especially the M versions which are the best sounding cars on the planet. Sorry, i am a real bmw-man, always been and always will be.
