ABout 12 years ago was the last zr-1 made. The Lotus/GM guys know how to make a powerful v8. 12 years ago, they had a v8 producing 400 hp and the gas mileage wasn't that bad either (8-12mpg). Now, the v8 will make around 600+ hp supercharged. So what's up with BMW's v8 guys? We have to twin turbo it to pass the 400 hp or what?

I don't think BMW had to turbo charge the new X6 V8 to get 400 hp. They did the turbo for fuel economy. You forget the new M3 has a 4.0 V8 with 420 hp.

Yah, I forgot about the M3. All things in perspective, Corvette LT5 was producing about 71 hp per liter in 1993 (5.7 liters at 405 hp). 10+ years later, BMW makes a 102 hp per liter, so I guess that's improvement over 72 hp per liter for the stock z06 7.0 liter (505 hp) Vette.

I guess someone can argue that hp/liter isn't everything, but strictly engine efficiency speaking, I guess BMW still as the upper hand.

Engine efficiency may go to BMW, but N/A V8 tunability to GM.

It ought to be an incredible automobile. However, IMHO, the price/performance ratio seems to be getting out of whack.

Horsepower is derived from torque and rpm. More horsepower can come about in two ways, make more torque, or make torque at a higher rpm. The two engines use completely different philosophies to create horsepower, neither one being a better way. The M3 V8 uses high revs or rpms to create its horsepower, you have to ring out the engine to get to the peak power(8,300rpm). The Z06 LS7 is a great example of using displacement to create more torque and then more horsepower. The LS7 is a 7.0 liter, which creates 500hp at 6,200rpm and 475tq at 4,800rpm.

And the best thing is the LS7 is lighter than the M3 V8.

Amen! And it is TORQUE that pins your @$$ to the seat when you floor it. V-8's are for low end torque not high end HP. A high revving V-8 makes no sense

I'd tend to think that there are many people MUCH smarter than you or I who would disagree with this statement. This new M3 will most likely go down as one of the best cars money can buy. There are lines around the block of every dealership to see one let alone buy one. I think you'll be sorry you put this in print. Just my opinion though. What do I know???

So if we were to compare BMW's new 4.4 liter TT (408 hp/4.4= 92.72) with GM"s 6.2 liter sc (620 hp/6.2=100), BMW's new TT v8 is still inferior?
