From what I can tell, bimmernav's solution is the BMW solution. Dealers are notoriously cluless about all the details dealing with BT retrofits.
Regardless of what your dealer says, my bet is that your 6/04 production car can have bluetooth and only with a software upgrade -- unless some critical parts (like the TCU) were changed from what came with the car from the factory.
Have you seen the following service bulletin? It's a bit confusing but is basically says you can get BT with just a software upgrade on cars built between 3/2004 and 8/2004. (There still may be an issue with the cradle but I don't see how bimmernav is getting around that issue either.)

To me, it looks like bimmernav is simply capitalizing on dealer confusion...

If your telephone module (TCU) didn't come from the factory with bluetooth, you need a new TCU with the option retrofitted to your vehicle. The PDF already explains that. Unfortunately this is not a warranty item so you'll have to coem out of pocket.
I got a hold of a 2005 TCU form an 330ci. Will it work in my 2004 545i( manufactured 03/04)

My Ride: 08 550 Carbon Sport Almost everything factory, but no sound upgrades.
Moto has a small Bluetooth speaker that can clip on the visor. Costs well under $100. Works very well.
Look for T305. Cost is $80 on the Moto web site.
