This document should answer all your questions. You will need to know your production date, if it is before 03/04, then it will be a lot more expensive to retrofit BT. If you don't understand the document, then take it to your dealership. Also, There might be a newer version of this BT retrofit bulletin.
Thank You very much

If your telephone module (TCU) didn't come from the factory with bluetooth, you need a new TCU with the option retrofitted to your vehicle. The PDF already explains that. Unfortunately this is not a warranty item so you'll have to coem out of pocket.

There is no real seperate bluetooth unit, all bluetooth operation is an integrated function of the TCU.
Are you familiar with the BTUM? It does, in fact, allow for BT operation outside of the TCU for cars that have the older TCU that doesn't provide BT fuctionality due to some conflict with BMW Assist...

BigLew, I realize you're a BMW tech but I don't think you realize that this board exists and thrives on the fact that there is much confusion about this complex vehicle (E60) among owners as well as dealers, including service advisors, technicians, and sales staff.

All I know is from SIBs, which state before a certain production year the only option is a new TCU.
