I have 2 mobile's an N91 and a 6680(both Nokia) that I try and use with my 06 530i(media package). The 6680 connects with the car's BT allowing me to recieve and make calls. No contacts list or address book sharing though
The N91, although paired up and set up as an authorised device does not connect. Have tried removing all phones and having only the N91 as the only device in the car's BT profile but no joy... anyone have such an issue?
I am now wondering if it's possible to set up a sync profile on the phone and configuring the car's BT as the device to synch with - there is a telematics id provided in iDrive. This would mean you should be able to define that the contact list on the phone is synced with the car. I've had a few goes at it but no luck...
Any ideas??
Thanks!

Are you familiar with the various BT profiles?

I don't think there's much you can do to the car to change the BT behavior. The contact sync is largely dependent on the phone and what BT profiles it supports. The car clearly supports the BT Hands-free profile (HFP) and possibly the Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) but unless the phone does too, you're likely to not see any contacts displayed on your screen.
I know there are other profiles that the car may support but the bottom line is that, as far as I know, knowing the telematics id of the car, etc. isn't going to help you out at all. Either the phone works well with the car or it does not...

Ok, maybe creating a profile and trying to synch the contacts list with the car's BT device wont work. At least a paired phone should work for making and receiving calls, right?

Here is what the BMW needs, from Rudy's Wiki:
Synchronisation Profile (SYNCH)
This profile allows synchronisation of Personal Information Manager (PIM) items. As this profile originated as part of the infrared specifications but has been adopted by the Bluetooth SIG to form part of the main Bluetooth specification, it is also commonly referred to as IrMC Synchronization.

Section 2.1 covers Basic Functionality, based on the current understanding of the needs for phones to provide good connectivity with PC's, PDA's, headsets, car kits and cameras. The standard recommendations are:
2.1.1 Bluetooth Audio (HFP, HSC) - This is the Hands-free / Headset profile set that lets you use a wireless headsets and similar devices.
2.1.2 Dial-up (DUN) - This allows your telephone to act as a modem, to connect your laptop or PDA to the Internet through your cell phone.
2.1.3 Synchronization (SynchML) - This allows synchronization of phone book and calendar. Generic Object Exchange (OBEX client role) is included in this section.
2.1.4 Object Push Profile (OPP) This allows users to transmit pictures, address books, ring tones, music, video and other files to and from the phone to another Bluetooth device. (The carriers really want to force these files over their network for a fee.)
2.1.5 File Transfer (FTP) to make files on the phone available to other devices.
2.1.6 Imaging (BIP) Basic imaging profile to receive images from other cameras.

So both phones as well the BMW support the Bluetooth Audio (HFP, HSC) because both phones can connect to wireless BT headsets and the BMW's BT is there for that sole purpose anyway. Also, the 6680 connects to the BMW, so this again shows the BMW supports BT Audio. So why doesn't the N91 'connect' to the BMW for simply receiving and/or making any calls like the 6680 does and can, even though it supports the BT Audio?

I've spent considerable time with BMW, Motorola, Verizon, and others and I think Rudy sums it up best.
It either works well with BMW BT or it doesn't.

Bluetooth itself is a very loose standard. There is little to no compatibility testing. It's like buying a new computer and discovering it won't communicate with your home network. OR buying a USB drive that won't store contacts.
