I did a little research on this last night.? It appears that while OBEX is supported on Pocket PCs, the object push server needed to allow the car to query the contacts database on the Pocket PC isn't.?
This isn't as bad as it sounds.? When I get some time, I plan on implementing that profile for the Pocket PC and Smartphone.? Looking at the code, it doesn't look that difficult.? The solution would also be generic for all Pocket PCs and Smartphones.? As with many things in life, its just finding the time.
That said, I don't see an issue in general with Pocket PCs and the suspend scenario brought up by subterFUSE.? I have a Pocket PC that works quite nicely with a BT headset.? The PPC can quickly link to the headset and allow the call to be answered even if it was in suspend when the call was received.? This problem may be specific to the 6315, since my PPC isn't an iPaq.
As for outbound calling, having the PPC in suspend mode is going to be an issue.? However, that too can be solved with a bit of software.? The other option is to have the user turn on the PPC to allow the BT link to set up and then hitting the call button.
BTW, this suspend problem won't be an issue with the Smartphone since it has a different power model.? More on this as I work out the details.

I've talked to some folks at Microsoft. Apparently the E60 Bluetooth stack uses some non-spec commands to query information from the phone. This, along with a few bugs in the old CE Bluetooth stack, prevent seamless use of the older/current Smartphones with the E60.
Its all been fixed in the new Windows Mobile 5 platform, (including specific testing on the E60) so it'll work on new Pocket PCs and Smartphones.
So as always, the answer is to upgrade that box! Actually, we need to wait until/if the OEMs decide to upgrade the software to Windows Mobile 5.
BTW, this answer doesn't cover Pocket PCs and Smartphones with non Microsoft Bluetooth stacks. For example, HP devices use a different stack. I'm not sure if they work or not.

So if someone took the phone and updated it to Windows Mobile 5, there could be a chance for it to all work together then?
Am I understanding you right?

However, my informed guess is that if you upgraded, it would work. That's what I'm working on.

I have an Audiovox XV6600 (Verizon) as well, and am waiting to pick up my new 545i. Any updates on how well this works? I'm not expecting any address book transfer, but sure would love to be able to use the car as a headset, so I can make and receive calls just by hitting the Phone button on the steering wheel?

Just picked up my 545i - I'd updated my XV6600 with new software from Audiovox's site just last week (the update was posted a couple of weeks ago, IIRC, mentioning this in case it makes a difference). In any case, my XV6600 paired just fine with the car (CIP 18.00.01), no Contacts transfer as was expected, but I was able to make and receive calls using the car's audio capabilities just fine. Hitting the "phone" button on the steering wheel works - very cool!
Haven't tried saving names and trying to use Voice Recognition to "Call Home", etc., but so far I'm happy just to have the phone interface with the car for basic functionality at least
