Bluetooth Confusion

I have a late March 04 build 530i. After reading numerous posts about bluetooth, I'm confused whether my car is capable of this feature or not. My dealer tells me it will cost a few hundred to update my car and there's no guarantee it will work properly and advised me to get a wireless head set because of better clarity and lesser expense? I don't want to do this if my car is capable of this feature. Another dealer told me "they could try" to update software but again I may spend a few hundred and may see no results.
Anyone out there with a March 04 or ealier build using bluetooth that could give me the straight facts on what I need to do to activate it?

You will require your dealer to enable BT in the car via a software update. You may not need to update all of the software, just the portion that affects BT. If your car was built after March 8 or so, you should have the updated TCU installed in your car. With the software update, that is all you need to do other than pair your phone with the car. Pairing takes a few minutes and is not difficult at all. Total cost should be in the $200 to $300 range for the labor to update the software only.
All of this is explained in SIB (service info bulletin) # SIB841304. Your service department should have access to this information.
On the other hand, if you have the older version TCU, you will need to repalce it in order to have BT functional. Cost is $1500 top $2500 depending upon how sweet a deal your service department is willing to cut you.
