Must say that the 6-cyl engines sounds much better than the 8-cyl engine to my ears!

having driven the 645ci, what i just heard sounds about... 2000% better

Is it me or does the 6-cylinder engines sound so much smoother than the v8?
Not surprised...BMW is traditionally known for their I6's, not their V8's.

Certainly doesn't seem to be the greatest recording. Based on these samples alone you'd think the Z4 file posted was the best sounding but the 650 sample seems to be a pretty nasty recording. My 545 sounded much better that this (and my 550 is still in break in so I've not gotten up to the real high end yet.) I don't think this does the 650 justice at all!!

AT Sharkfest in Spartanburg last month we had our one 650 line up with our three 645s and did the direct comparison test. Three guys and a lady (spouse of one owner) were doing the listening. Two of us heard the differences (revving up at standstill) but the other claimed they could not hear difference. I thought the 645 was sharper, perhaps a little closer to a I6 M engine exhaust sound. The 650 to me was deeper more throaty to me but not louder. As you can see even with four of us there we could not reach consensus. During our 90 mile run of 55-60 6ers (all but four, e24s) I was behind some M6, B10 Alpinas, etc and some mighty nice sounds filled the air

Agree, there's no way that recording is a fair representation of the true sound of a 650 or 645!!

the straight 6 sounds a bit monotone...
where as the 4.8 V8 makes like a rumbling, burbling sound..

I thin the Z4's 6 is the old M54, and the 130i's being the new R6.
M54 sounds a lot better IMO.

I don't think these were recorded near the exhaust, maybe somewhere next to the engine, or attached to the exterior of the car
