you aren't comparing apples with apples - perhaps your love of MB is clouding your vision 
This post was about the likelihood that we will see an oil burning 6-series and the fact that such powerful, light, refined and responsive diesel engines are being designed and produced suggests to me that we definately will.
As to the question of which engine is best - who knows - neither of your 'best' engines are available to buy in the UK yet.
What strikes me though is that the 535d gets A LOT of performance from a 3.0 litre block. If BMW similarly fettled the 4.5 litre V8, then I would think it likely to be more than a match for a 4.0 litre bi-turbo mercedes.
The VW v10 is based on older technology than these other engines and is already surpassed by the 745d. I'm sure though that VW are looking at this, but due to the resounding lack of success of the phaeton, this is more likely to end up an Audi thing.

Agree with the remark also on your last post about the 6er. It's not a prosche nor a ferrari, it's a GT car.

I had a lot of fun with a brand new 650i cab the other day and over a 3 mile stretch of dual carrigeway with 2 roundabouts in there I kept pulling away from him, he actually wound his window down and said he was amazed that he was struggling to keep up. not surprising mate, at first i though you were dissing us but then i realized yours was already tuned by DMS. The 650cab is very heavy and will possibly be a bit slower than your 535d to 60mph. Besides proly he hadnt finished with the breaking in ?
