Everything You Need to Know About the E30 M3
We know that the E30 M3 was birthed from motorsport, but what makes it so different from the other M3s that came after? Well, the video below should help answer that. It features interviews with people who were part of the team that made this iconic car a reality. Fierce competition in the German Touring Car series, known to us as DTM, spawned the skunkworks at BMW’s Motorsport division to create one that abided by the rules, but also gave traditional BMW luxuries for the road.
5,000 units were commissioned, but the completely re-worked coupe caused such a rage among enthusiasts that by the end of production, nearly four times that number were made. Of course, one must be a fool to not fall in love with the overly generous amount of power coming from the 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, enhanced areo (only the doors and hood were of the same measure as the standard car), and suspension tuning that put M on the map of enthusiasts for decades to come. Now very much considered a classic in its own right, the E30 M3 lives on as a shining point in BMW’s heritage, even with its modesty by today’s standards.
