The E30 318iS Is the 2002’s Spirit Animal

There’s a mechanical simplicity to the BMW 2002 that remains admirable to this day. When you’re driving, you’ll find an obvious lack of adjustments, for… everything. The steering had just one setting because it was great. The exhaust had just one setting because it was great. The suspension also had one setting because… well, you get the idea.

With the E30 318iS, the ethos is the same. The classic styling is still present, and the drive is simple, before the days of burdensome technology. In many ways it is the successor to the 2002, which is why Dalia Wolfe purchased hers, as showcased in Petrolicious‘s wonderful mini-documentary below.

In this video, we learn that the 318iS coupe was a one-year model, only available in 1991, and was the last of the coupes available in the E30 overall production run. This specific one has covered an astonishing 327,000 miles, which Dalia says is a testament to the German engineering and quality that “broke the mold.” Twice the owner of an E30 in my own lifetime, I have to agree.
