Which BMW Is the Best Ever?

Deciding which BMW is the best driver’s car is not an easy task. The lineage of BMW’s M division is littered with amazing race cars and road cars, but Autocar has narrowed the list down to just two: the M1 and the E30 M3. Both make great arguments for themselves, with the M1 being the genesis of the M brand itself. But after hearing some compelling arguments on behalf of the E30 M3, I’m not so sure that the M1 truly stands as the best of BMW’s drivers cars.

The tipping point for the E30 comes in the form of its usability. It might not be as fast as the M1, but in terms of how often you want to drive it, it can’t be matched. In addition, its full performance is readily accessible, where you can enjoy everything from a casual drive down your favorite road, all the way up to 10/10ths. The motorsport roots that gave birth to this car also seal the deal. The bespoke unibody and the 2.3 litre 4-cylinder are straight out of a homologation rule-book, and this combination elevates the E30 M3 to the best BMW driver’s car. Right?
