how difficult to swap out?

Very easy...

1. Disconnect Battery!

2. Pop out the existing airbag by sticking a screw driver with the flat tip towards the sides of the car up into the whole on the bottom of the steering wheel.

3. When you push up it'll be springy.. you'll hit that thin metal wire that runs along the bottom of the wheel which bends the same metal wire at the top right and left of the wheel to release the airbag. You can see the metal wires in the picture of the front center of the steering wheel in the to right and left center in the square cutouts and at the bottom in the cut outs. The screw driver pushes the metal wire and releases the airbag. Try it on the replacement wheel to see how it bends the metal wires out.

4. Unplug wires.

5. Unbolt the wheel.

Reverse steps to reinstall.

On this particular wheel, the 4 connector plug is for the steering wheel buttons, the two connector wires(blue/brown for the heating element and the single wire(red) for the horn(I think).

It is possible but requires some modifications. I would recommend just getting the correct version for your car. The version I have is for MY E60/61 > 09/2005.
