I am leaning toward getting a diesel when my lease is up in July 07. I want to do something that is better for the environment. As an architect I would like to be environmentally responsible.

Why do you think they are a 'bad sickness', AlexFW?
Because they are too common in Italy?

They smell, sound like TTTTTTTTTTTTTRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, they have only 4k rpm ... Not a pleasure drive a diesel!

Who has diesel guess to go a lot, also if he has only a sux VW Golf 2.0TDI 140 HP : they go on the road like a rocket, they always push all the pedal, even with 100 HP .

It's really a sickness, trust me ..

Every people would prefer a petrol V8, if the consumption was not so high : here people get 530d/535d and NOBODY 545i/550i for consumption, not surely for the torque or the TTRR sound .
(535d does 13 kml where the 545i does 9 ..)

Good news, it's about time and I'm a big fan of the BMW diesels - but from a driveability standpoint. The perception about environmental benefits and some of the posts to this effect do however bug me little. Simple fact remains that the reason the diesels can't *currently* be sold in the US is that they fail the emissions tests
But till the 15th October 2006 US diesel was sulpherised cooking fat.

Are you suggesting that BMW would introduce a Diesel model if it couldn't pass emission laws?

Though not necessarily a reliable source http://www.stealthtdi.com/Emissions.html summarises my understanding.

Summary

Diesel cars are better than petrol cars with reference to carbon dioxide, the global warming gas.

Diesel cars are better than petrol cars with reference to carbon monoxide, a poison.

Diesel cars are better than petrol cars with reference to hydrocarbons which cause cancer.

Diesel cars are similar to petrol cars with reference to nitrous oxides, which cause smog.

Diesel cars are worse than petrol cars with reference to particulates, which have unproved health impacts.

There is some truth in what you are saying. In some European cities, the smell of diesel can be sickening. I have noticed this a lot in France, Italy and Spain especially. I think this might be because the diesel 'fleet' is quite old and you see lots of older cheap cars like Fiats and Renaults with fairly primitive diesel engines (remember the technology has been moving quickly so 5 years ago would be 'primitive'). I think the new diesels and particularly the BMW ones are very clean and don't smell bad at all. You doesn't notice the stink of diesel as much in Ireland or the UK as our cars (particularly) the diesel ones are often newer and more expensive (people caught onto the diesel game a bit later over here so we don't have too many old diesels)

You might have a point about fuel consumption being a major reason why people avoid petrol in larger cars. If the world had unlimited supplies of oil or we simply didn't give a toss about the environment at all then more of us might go the 'American way' and just buy the biggest, baddest petrol engines we could get our hands on (I apologise in advance to our American brethen for that stereotype as I know there are quite a few people in the US care a lot about the environment and their bank account).

You might find it hard to believe but there are a growing number of people who buy diesel cars for the engine characteristics and even the sound. You have to remember that although there is a fuel saving, a good diesel engine can cost a lot more than the 'equivalent' petrol so most people (unless they do a lot of driving or hold on to their car for many years) will never recoup the additional cost of a diesel engine. This means they must be buying them because (i) they just like the feel of them and think the concept is cool (ii) care about the environment (less common) or (iii) don't calculate the cost/benefit properly and are generous when they spend tens of thousands buying the car but stingy at the petrol/diesel pump (quite likely).

Diesel fuel is 7% more expensive in UK than unleaded so there must be something else than "headline price at the pump" here.

Also I have never understood (maybe it's taxation) why diesel is cheaper than unleaded almost everywhere else when, weight for weight it is more costly to get to the pumps than unleaded.
