Isn't the 7-serie's iDrive Windows CE and 1/3/5/6-series Sun Java based? That's what I've understood.

Do I sense Fiat bashing on this thread? I have owned 5 BMW's (currently a 545) and am lucky enough to own 2 Fiats currently (a 71 Fiat Spider w/ dual Webers and a 80 131 Fiat Abarth)--probably 2 of the most fun cars I have ever owned. I love BMW's (and Porsches for that matter) BUT IMO Italian cars just have more of a "personality" and are in a way a little more fun to drive. My old Spider has no power anything and it feels very "true" and driving it hard is a lot more challenging than driving my 545 hard. But nothing will beat the sound of an Italian Twin Cam and Webers after a proper heel-and-toe downshift!!! I am lucky to see Fiat in the forefront for a change w/ USB technology. I am awaiting the arrival of Alfa in the US hopefully in 2008?? I could totally see myself driving the new Brera as a fun "extra" car in the garage.

let's change Windows to Linux or MacOSX
For me the issue with all this IT / Car integration is about clarity of thought. The Idrive is a brave idea, but IMO it doesn't actually DO a great deal.

My Ride: F11 520d white, auto, professional sat-nav with internet, variable damper control, sports steering wheel, extended lighting, retractable tow bar, wing mirrors with dimming & folding, full electric seats with memory & lumber adjustment, etc.
Running both a PC & a Mac at home I agree that BMW should steer well clear of ANYTHING Microsoft, endless hours updating software and protecting from viruses, malware etc for the PC as opposed to the Mac means my own money will not go to Microsoft in a PC environment again. I also agree that unless your adding navigation & telephony to the i-drive system that in every other case its pretty basic and I miss simple push buttons that you instinctively learn to go to. Change for change sake is not nessisarily better.
