Would you trade your 550i straight up for the new M3?

I'd much rather have an e92 M3 over a 550. Or if you don't need the space, consider a used 997S for roughly the same price. Or maybe the new GTR.
I wouldn't consider it a downgrade at all, perhaps a unilateral move if anything. If fact, many enthusiasts would consider it an upgrade. Who cares what other people think though as you should drive the car for yourself.
The M3 will be faster, handle better and simply be more fun to drive. It looks as if you enjoy modding, so the M3 will also offer more choices in this area. The M3 crowd in general contains more enthusiasts, so if you enjoy meets, drives and track gatherings, you should have plenty to choose from.
As mentioned, the new M3 should command a nice markup if you wish to be one of the early adopters. With that said however, I've read of many M5 owners buying at MSRP when the car first came out. Either way, get on a waiting list now or have some type of agreement with your dealer over pricing.
