The 130i has 5Kw more because of a different air intake box and mostly to the shorter and less restrictive ( hence louder ) exhaust
The apparent reason for the less restrictive exhaust is because BMW says the 130i driver will be a more sporty type person who likes more noise
Otherwise its the exact same engine

The reason why theres a power difference between the same us engines and euro engines is down to fuel. The gasoline u use in the us isnt quite as refined and not as many additives as the euro petrol. well thats what i heard.?
yeah 130i should be a hell of a ride!?

[/quote]I think they've already stated the reason for the increase. As I speculated in my first post, it's nothing more than piping. When you're not worrying as much about noise, your airbox can be a bit more effective, and the same thing goes for the exhaust. The 5 needs to be a bit more refined and it will be penalized for it. Bolt on an aftermarket exhaust and/or intake system and you'll experience the same gains.
US gas has different mixes. Interestingly, the BMW, Honda, Toyota, General Motors consortium called "TopTierGas" actually stipulates at least 8% of the fuel be comprised of ethanol by volume - which has far lower BTU than petrol.

I've begun using this gas exclusively since BMW backs the mix. The US is getting ethanol whether we like it or not, which kind of sucks, but what can you do?
