What?
RS4
1650kg
4.8s(o-100)
420hp(7800)
430Nm

M3(2007)
1655kg
4.8s(0-100)
420hp(8300)
400Nm

It seems that BMW had a clear target...
----> very dissapointed of this. How come bmw can come up with a car with 2 doors less, carbon fiber roof, and the target to the weight and still mess it up. It should have been around 1600kilos.

I really don't understand from where the extra weight eve compared to the E46 m3 which had a 1575kg. For sure not from the engine from where the v8 is actually lighter (15kg) than the E46 M3 engine, for sure not from the CF roof which however you take it, it is lighter than the one found in the E46 M3. My only thoughts go out to technology and gizmos such as the idrive and stuff but...still if they plan to introduce (which i hope) a revised SMG 3 gearbox or DSG type which for sure will add some extra weight.

I agree, it really seems weard. And think that audi has a 4WD BMW should have been around 1600kg.
But anyway I think that M3 has a better weight distribution. Somebody know RS4,s figures?

Here's my best guess:
BMW will see to it that the M3 will NOT be quicker to 60mph than their very own M6. That's just bad business.

BMW will not step on their own feet.
+1 This is logical.

I dont know, 4.8 doesnt sound right at all. Z3 M roadster used to be fastest bmw at one point and that wasnt on top of the food chain in their lineup. I think there being VERY conservative if those numbers are official. Look at M6 vs M5. BMW claims they are equals which in fact there not.

August 2006 issue of Motor Trend:

2007 Audi RS4

Curb weight: 3967 lbs.
Weight distribution f/r: 59/41%

0-60mph: 4.5 sec
0-100mph: 11.4 sec
1/4 mile: 13.0 sec @ 102.1mph

Honestly, I was expecting BMW to surpass their "target" not match it. If I'm not mistaken, the Audi RS4 was released over a year ago.

Yes they should have done that with numbers too, but RS4 seems nose heavy (like all audis) and I am positively sure that M3 will
outhandle it. I think we customers too have to realise in some point that hp and torque is not the only thing to value.. We have been spoiled
resent years with tremendeous speed of improvment in motor techniks...I mean, where does it stop?

I am also disapointed with those quoted figures.

The E46 M3 struggled to get all the power down through the rear wheels
My friends RS4 struggles to get the power through the clutch (it doesn't seem strong enough)

2WD or 4WD - have we reached a plateau in performance (as the weight of these marques increases?)
Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm assuming you're not referring to the B7 RS4...

Yeh, he has a six month old B7 RS4.
It had a new clutch at 6000 miles and it still struggles to get the power to the wheels without the clutch slipping.
4 new tyres at 12,000 miles - so he is trying to have fun!

Nah..I think this is just your friend being stuped, anybody can break a car in 6 months, even 40 hp Fiat punto - even in one week. You dont need 420 hp for that...

Anyway it might be that you are right about normal cars are coming close to the reasonable range of hp and performance.
