The e46 coupe I had definitely was my favorite BMW. The e46 M3 I drove at M School was perhaps the most enjoyable car I've driven. So, I see what you mean. All the electronics do make one feel a bit less connected to the road. The e60 experience is different, but still in a good way. I may have to get an e92 to compare.

Well, if your referring to the classic look and style of the 3 series, I'd go back to the E30.
I do however love the look of the newer models, but the E30 (happened to be the first BMW I owned) has the strong classic lines and performance to go with it.

I had an 89 318ci as well, I love the E30. Just something about the E30 M3 that just kills everything else, great looks, great driver's car, fast and responsive. Nothing better IMHO. Besides more than 20 years later and it STILL looks good, the flared fenders, the spoiler, just bad ass. Looks like a car meant to flog on the twisties.

the e46 is a great car but the E9x M3 is so much more refined yet powerful!
I have put many miles on a E90 M3, it feels huge compared to my E46 M3. My sisters E90 M3 interior feels nearly as big as my E60. It really does feel like the true successor to the E39 M5. The DCT puts the power down so smooth, you don't realize how fast you are going. The SMG jerky shifts acutally makes the E46 feel faster, but there is no doubt the new M3 smokes it.
E46 M3 does feel more like a sports car. But I do believe the E9x M3 is a more advanced car.
