Movado watches look good and are not ultra-expensive.

you can pick up a movado from an online retailer for ~400 bucks.

this one is on sale for $477, down from a grand:

Movado Luno

that one is my third fav from them.

Movados are great quality swiss watches, but they aren't really exclusive because of their relatively fair pricing and their advertising/name recognition. I like movados, but I like exclusivity, which movado isn't really known for. I can go to work and see a movado on five peoples wrist in a given day, but not the one i have! that is why I bought the one I did. If you want to save money, check out jomashop.com. Their prices are great, and the watches are guaranteed authentic. You just dont get the manufacturers warranty, and the customer service sucks. You will always pay more for swiss, and you will always pay more for automatics.

Cheap could mean a $30 Casio. I like Citizen watches, nice but not overly expensive. The Eco Drive line never needs batteries and the Skyhawks look good and do it all for the $200-$300 range, depending on the sale.

in the world of watches, i consider my 3K watch relatively cheap. You could spend $325K on a patek phillip

I don't think 3K is "cheap". It is obviously a LOT less than the 6-7 figure watch some people can afford, but there are way more people in this world who would consider a 3k dollar watch "expensive" than those who can afford a 6 or 7 figure watch.

My daily watch is a titanium Omega Seamaster with the brushed finish and blue face. I read earlier comments about the weight of the Omegas; this one weighs a fraction of what the stainless steel pieces weigh. I've worn it every day since I bought it as a b-day present to myself in 2001. The pic below is my actual watch. I've been looking to pickup a Breitling Aerospace lately. Been on the fence for a few weeks now. Not that there's anything wrong with the Omega, just want to change things up a bit.

I saw the comment about Madoff's Rolex and it thought I'd share about a similar looking Rolex. My father has an mid 80's 18k gold GMT Master with the jubilee bracelet and hidden clasp. It has the bronze face/bezel, which to me really sets the look apart from the usual black face/bezel. I'm posting this because he said when the time comes it will be mine. Below is a stock pic I came across which is identical to my fathers.

Phil, if you are looking for a sporty watch with a good automatic movement with automotive-inspired design, have a look at the Oris line. This is one of their Williams F1 team day/date watches. You can add complications and price, but these are very reliable and sturdy timepieces and can be had for under $800.

Great looking watch. A timeless classic. But I am still smitten with the 18K Daytona with black dial. I can't believe that Madoff's 2004 Daytona with that set up went for $29K -- basically the retail price of a new one. You will see the 18K Daytona from that year priced around $16K-$22K. The buyer paid a premium for Madoff's.
