Have a few days off mid March, wife and I are visiting Edinburgh. We'd like to see the city and Scottish highlands - anyone know/experienced any nice routes in the area? Any suggestions?
TIA

They have a nice castle in Edinburgh.
That's about all what I've seen over the years. Airport, Hotel, Stadium... and the castle...

And not far from the castle their is one of those real touristy museums, something like the Museum of Whiskey. Kind of cheesy, but fun. Also, can't remeber the exact title, but did one of those walking tours at night, something like ghosts of Edinburgh or Haunted Edinburgh, which was pretty neat.

In Edinburgh, on the river, is the HMS Britannia, which was the Royal Yacht up until the 1980's. It's very cool. From Edinburgh, you're not too far from Stirling and Stirling castle. From Stirling, it's not too far to Glen Coe (one of the prettiest places I've ever been).
The road from Ft. William (at the western end of Glen Coe) up the Caledonian Canal, past Loch Ness and Urquart castle (www.castles.org/Chatelaine/URQUHART.HTM) on to Inverness is fantastic, too.
In the opposite direction, you can cross the "Firth of Forth" and go in to the area known as "Fife" and visit St. Andrews (the home of golf). The drive north out of St. Andrews and up the eastern coastline is gorgeous, all the way to Aberdeen. There is an awesome castle called Dunnottar (http://www.castles.org/Chatelaine/DUNNOTTAR.HTM) that's along that road.
You should also try to get up to the Isle of Skye and see Eilean Donan castle (http://www.castles.org/Chatelaine/EDC/e-donan.htm). The drive to Skye from Loch Ness is simply spectacular.
My wife and I spent 8 days in Scotland back in 2002, and it was a very memorable vacation. You can check out our pics on Shutterfly...
