My wife and I lived in San Francisco for 8+ years, but am born and raised in New York City (Manhattan - Upper West Side, to be exact ). I LOVED California. Didn't care much for Southern California (Sorry guys, no offense), but loved NorCal. I would do it. You can always move back to your roots. Take a chance. Live a little .

As Americans, I always find that people have a hard time stepping outside their comfort zone. You need to take risks in life. Afterall, with risk can come reward. Go for it! You won't regret it!
+1. If you really want a global perspective and a true appreciation for both where you are and what you left, you really ought to take it up a notch and live abroad as well.

Funny you mention that...I really wanted to live in Australia, prior to moving to the West Coast. That would have been great!

I'm from LA but no offense, I could never live in Irvine! I've been spoiled by living in most of the major cities around the world and need that 'fast pace'! LOL

Irvine is nice though but maybe when I'm 50....
