My biggest concern would be violating the integrity of the crashworthiness of the car. BMW doors are designed to "bite" on impact impact and stay closed to help protect the occupants.
Would this modification (that I'd NEVER get myself) do anything to compromise the safety of the car?

I think it is funny that the Q&A says no "special" tools required, but the red 3-series has the front fender off to install the hinges. My guess, not a shad tree mechanic install.

As far as safety goes, I really don't think it would be an issue. The steel beam in side of the door is still there, and the its position relative to the hook-up does not change when the doors are closed (I think, not sure). My biggest concerns are with longivity and operational quality of this product, and the "too flashy" bordering pimp effect casted on to the owner.
If you have the doors done professionally, the installation will run you around $1200-$1500 USD. I don't know if there is any warranty though.
Although this conversion is reversible, many parts from the 1/4 panel has to be cut/drilled. I think you have to buy few new parts in order to reverse it.
I agree that scissor door conversion would look better on a 2 door coupe than sedans. Perhaps it's because the doors on the coupes are longer, so they look like wings when raised. 4 door sedans has shorter doors. When raised, the doors would look like Dumbo's ear rather than Tinkerbell's wings.
But if you want the attention, you can certainly consider this cheap mode.
