I agree...I spent many years taking racing photos and although your pictures look really amazing John, many of them don't capture the incredible speed of the cars. I realize you probably could've used a faster shutter speed and literally made the cars look stationary (able to read the white lettering on the tires and all) but panning the camera and not just blurring the background but actually streaking it does wonders...
i totally agree gentlemen! i am still very much a student of photography and always learning. i honestly went with what i knew and felt comfortable with at the time. i was hoping to hit the LBGP again tomorrow, but with the Laker playoff game....not gonna make it. i will most certainly try to shoot at a slower SS and pan. i know how hard it to do properly.

It may not be as hard as it used to be with your newer gear. In the old days, I used a Canon A1 and had to pre-focus the camera at the spot I thought I'd be hitting the shutter. With the newer cameras, I assume the automatic focus is now fast enough to lock in on the car more precisely. The only remaining challenge is to center the car in the frame, if that's what you intend to do. Keep in mind that sometimes the best racing car photos are ones where you are so close (or zoomed in so much) that the whole car does not fit in the frame. These "cut off" shots sometimes look really great!
