I'm in a real dilemma on whether I should get LCD or PLASMA TV. I need HDMI input, Component Input, and all those HD input stuff, so which brand should I get, and which one, LCD or Plasma, and whats the difference? Anyone can help recommend a good TV I can get to play PS3 on, and hook up DVI into? Please help me!! Thanks.

LCD is all the way even if new gen. HD Plasmas are nice.

LCD keeps contarst for 10-15 years at least, ONYL SONY BRAVIA (like Bavaria) LoL ok, sorry.

Plasma consumes more electricity, used to have a characteristics that you could only see from angles, now it is normally ok, the contrast is max 5-10 yrs.

So after that time you could normally only see TV in a totally dark room.

LCD is silent uses less electricity and has much brighter image. Buy only HDD and in LCD they now also have 50-60".

Plasmas are also bigger as available size.

Count with 7 m watching distance for a 50" but as it is LCD you can watch from 10 cm, as the LCD does not hurt our eyes. Good luck and post in "what did you buy today?"

Wait until this summer. Two very promising technologies are arriving in both the plasma and LCD space.

Pioneer had closed-door demonstrations of their 8th gen plasma panels at CES. Touting 80% deeper blacks, this new panel will be a marvel.

Samsung announced the 81D series, due in July that has an actively dimming LED backlighting system. I'm guessing it is licensed from Brightside - and the timing is certainly right - Haitz's law was due to catch up right about now, making it possible to easily incorporate the powerful LEDs necessary without the excessive power requirements and heat that were associated with the technology 2 years ago. The original Brightside 37" was a $50,000 display that required water cooling for the LEDs.

Anyway, here is a thread showing some side-by-sides, but it's impossible to show the depth and DR of this technology with web snapshots. I'm personally waiting for the 81D series.

I walked in to the store with every intention of purchasing the 60" Pioneer Elite plasma. The sales rep talked me out of it and instead recommended the Sony SXRD XBR. I've had it about a year and it is phenomenal plus it was a lot cheaper.

Here's another vote for the Sony Bravia XBR. I bought mine one year ago and it's an excellent TV with a fantastic picture.

1st place Sony 2nd place Samsung. Sony is only a bit better than Samsung @ visual quality but it's much more expensive.
Oh and btw LCD all the way.

You guys are all still talking current-gen technology.

Stuff that's 3-6 months away that is -worth waiting for-

-HDMI 1.3 interfaces (greater greyscale bit depth as well as wider color gamut) (LCD and Plasma)
-Faster response times (LCD)
-more 120hz refresh rate sets (less judder during movement) (LCD and Plasma)
-Pioneer's redesigned plasma panels with polymer that acts as a ND filter infused into the panel (much better CR and black levels)
-Pioneer and others are improving the video processing on their Plasmas and LCDs (processing accounts for much of Sony's advantages)
-LED backlighting (wider color gamut) (LCD)
-Active dimming LED backlighting (incredible black levels, white levels, and CR) (only Samsung LCD so far)

-LCD has caught up to plasma, actually outpaced it in terms of size. Sharp showed a 108" LCD at CES.
-Plasma is catching up to LCD in terms of native panel resolution. Sets 42", 50", 58", 65" + are popping up that are 1080p
-As far as longevity, LCD and Plasma are identical and have been for at least 3 or 4 years. Most are around the 60,000 hour mark to half-brightness - which is what a CRT tube television is.
-Both LCD and Plasma television manuals warn against the display of static images and the possibility of image retention. For both technologies, the risks are minor and pretty much a non-issue.

Plasma is still a bit better for motion
Plasma won't have pixel defects
Plasma still has slightly better viewing angles
Plasma has a lower price point for 50"+ sizes
Plasma produces nice, even luminance across the screen
Plasma is harder to view in bright rooms due to reflections
Plasmas can suffer from green phosphor lag (slower than the red and blue)

LCD screen coatings are better if viewing in bright rooms
LCD televisions are generally brighter
LCD televisions are usually lighter, quieter, require less power, and generate less heat
LCD comes in sizes smaller than 37" (Plasma doesn't)
LCD suffers from "clouding" ... basically uneven backlighting (Sony has had lots of problems recently)
LCD technology will always have some amount of pixel defects - often clusters of defects that can be quite visible under normal viewing conditions

I had the same question in November when I went to bestbuy. After talking to two different people I got two different answers. So, I just judged for myself. I ended up getting a Samsung Plasma, because the LCD picture looked to artificial to me. Plus the plasma was a lot brighter. I'm not a tech guy, I just bought what looked better to me. I noticed the following two problems that UUronL posted:
1.) Plasma is still a bit better for motion.
2.) LCD technology will always have some amount of pixel defects - often clusters of defects that can be quite visible under normal viewing conditions
