lcds for satellite tv and freeview, plasma is better for DVDs and D-VHS...

brand > fujitsu (although we went with Bravia, as it was the best on the bulgarian market)

Dont bother with HDMI 1.3 , no tellys will support deep colour for another 18 months at least

So the vote here would be LCD TV from Sony. Any recommended sizes, because my bro had a 42" Plasma from Samsung, and it didn't look too good, I gotta admit, when playing non hd stuff. or according to UUronL, i should wait until summer to get the latest technology stuff? Come on guys, what should I do and which should I get. I'm depending on you tech guys on here.

The only good thing that will come in summer (firstly on fujitsu and pioneer sets) is the 120hz refresh rate. Other than that now is a good time to get a screen. Sony offer a couple of different series of tellys, each boasting 1080p and a different feature set... you gotta choose along your budget man

Agree.
I have done extensive research on the subject and I'm putting my multimedia upgrade off until the above points above are intergrated. Even LCD pc monitors will get these attributes soon and I consider it important for me since I do some photo/video editing. It will be closer to my CRT experience with regards to contrast and color gamut, both on the TV and pc monitor.

1st place Sony 2nd place Samsung. Sony is only a bit better than Samsung @ visual quality but it's much more expensive.
Oh and btw LCD all the way.
Correct Here is the story that they will never confess or tell you. I knew once a high up rep, in Samsung. You know why Samsung is so good as the best Sony???

Sony long-long time ago had a plant in Korea and then some "smart guys" shot down the whole production... but all the trained Korean workers and the TOOLS and production machines were left there...so these guys made up a company from all the experiences and tools of prev. Sony this company is called ? SAMSUNG.

I vote only for Bravia still the best! whatever they will come with I will never buy a Plasma, although that would be cheaper... LCD is better, that is it.

You guys are all still talking current-gen technology.

Stuff that's 3-6 months away that is -worth waiting for-

-HDMI 1.3 interfaces (greater greyscale bit depth as well as wider color gamut) (LCD and Plasma)
-Faster response times (LCD)
-more 120hz refresh rate sets (less judder during movement) (LCD and Plasma)
-Pioneer's redesigned plasma panels with polymer that acts as a ND filter infused into the panel (much better CR and black levels)
-Pioneer and others are improving the video processing on their Plasmas and LCDs (processing accounts for much of Sony's advantages)
-LED backlighting (wider color gamut) (LCD)
-Active dimming LED backlighting (incredible black levels, white levels, and CR) (only Samsung LCD so far)
-LCD has caught up to plasma, actually outpaced it in terms of size. Sharp showed a 108" LCD at CES.
-Plasma is catching up to LCD in terms of native panel resolution. Sets 42", 50", 58", 65" + are popping up that are 1080p
-As far as longevity, LCD and Plasma are identical and have been for at least 3 or 4 years. Most are around the 60,000 hour mark to half-brightness - which is what a CRT tube television is.
-Both LCD and Plasma television manuals warn against the display of static images and the possibility of image retention. For both technologies, the risks are minor and pretty much a non-issue.
Plasma is still a bit better for motion
Plasma won't have pixel defects
Plasma still has slightly better viewing angles
Plasma has a lower price point for 50"+ sizes
Plasma produces nice, even luminance across the screen
Plasma is harder to view in bright rooms due to reflections
Plasmas can suffer from green phosphor lag (slower than the red and blue)
LCD screen coatings are better if viewing in bright rooms
LCD televisions are generally brighter
LCD televisions are usually lighter, quieter, require less power, and generate less heat
LCD comes in sizes smaller than 37" (Plasma doesn't)
LCD suffers from "clouding" ... basically uneven backlighting (Sony has had lots of problems recently)
LCD technology will always have some amount of pixel defects - often clusters of defects that can be quite visible under normal viewing conditions
wow mate you are the real TECH "GEEK" cool that you share all of these, thx really

You know in the States and Asia things are coming out fast, but here in EU we always have to wait more.

Well I'm telling you that at CES, televisions were coming out of the woodwork with HDMI 1.3 interfaces. Televisions that are announced with prices - due in spring/summer.

Now, whether or not there will be cable and Sat boxes with HDMI 1.3 is another story. The only HDMI 1.3 source device I know of that is currently available is the newest top-of-the-line Toshiba HD-DVD player, the HD-XA2. More devices will follow. The bottom line is, 1.3 is the way forward and buying something with 1.2 at this point in time doesn't make a ton of sense IMO.

HDTV cameras are constantly improving, and the color information they capture is -greatly- more than what gets encoded and transmitted. Unless you have ever seen uncompressed HD, you really don't know what I'm talking about. We're talking about 1.5Gb/s - yes, gigabits per second for uncompressed HD. Contrast that to the 19.38 Mbps used for the ATSC standard broadcast.

I dug this exerpt up from a recent article:

"Roadblocks to the full realization of HD's potential seemed much on the mind of HDTV entrepreneur Mark Cuban (he of HDNet and Mavericks fame). Cuban spent much of his allotted keynote speech time moaning about how compression is killing off the beauty of true HD broadcasts (which, uncompressed as shot by the Sony equipment his network uses, would require 1.5GB per second rather than the 19.4mbps capacity of the bandwidth the feds have given over-the-air broadcasters for their digital signal)."

The information is there, and we're seeing higher quality broadcasts -and- recorded media with each passing day. It's an evolving medium. Anyone who has had HD for more than a few years can probably sense that image quality has improved over time. I certainly can. This will continue, and I strongly believe having the newer technologies with wider data paths for the transmittal of visual information (HDMI 1.3) as well as a real way to go about presenting that information (LED backlighting or laser backlighting - i.e. wider gamut) will be beneficial.

BTW - for those who like RP technologies, the LED and laser backlit DLPs will have incredible color gamut - not to mention they will no longer require color wheels (no more rainbows) and they'll no longer require expensive bulb replacements.

Get this tv. It has the best picture, hands down, for the money. I have a 50" Pioneer Elite Plasma in my bedroom and feel that the SXRD still blows it away. Sure, it doesn't have the shallow depth that plasma's and LCD's have, but if you want quality over size and depth, this is the TV to get.

SONY SXRD XBR2

Here are what the user opinions are on CNET. It get's an 8.9 out of 10 from those that have rated this tv. One of the highest on CNET for TV's.

http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_KDS_R60XBR2/4...28.html?tag=sub

This model Sony also comes in a 70" and the speakers are detachable.

Another choice is this tv. It recently got a great review at CES and was given many awards. Where else can you get a 47" LCD with 1080p for under $2,000!
