At whatever distance you can reliably hit what you're aiming for while under stress. If you can't reasonably hit the target at 25 yards, you have no reason to take the shot at 25 yards. You're legally responsible for whatever and whoever you hit, and all kidding aside, God forbid it's not an innocent bystander.

Think about this also...if you do decide to go for your weapon and the BG is faster than you, you're now faced with being shot with your own weapon. This is serious stuff to think about. Safety first.

Low = anticipation. Try this...take the mag out of the weapon. Check the chamber visually and with your finger (finger f**k it). Check for an empty magwell. Check the chamber again. Make sure the weapon is unloaded. A lot of people have been shot with unloaded guns.

Point the weapon in a safe direction. Work the slide. Point the weapon in a safe direction. Watch the front sight and pull the trigger. FS should be rock solid.

Repeat.

You can do this at home a few hundred times.

Then go to the range, do this 10 times. Then put one round in the magazine. Fire the weapon.

Repeat.

Try that a few times and see how you do.

Depends on the condition of the weapon (in a holster, in a fanny pack, in your hand?), your stress level (alert, nervous, etc...), your mental condition (asleep at 2:30am, at the mall, staring at a chicks ass, etc...), and so on. 7 yards is the minimum? under what conditions? One thing I hate about statistics is that it's based on other people and not you. Pace off 21 feet and see how fast that takes you from a stand still. Try it a few times. So use that as your baseline, ok? Now get yourself a timer, set the par time as that 21 foot distance you ran, and get off a shot from whatever condition you think you will be in when you have to use the weapon; in your hand...from concealment...from a fanny pack, etc...

Think about this also...if you do decide to go for your weapon and the BG is faster than you, you're now faced with being shot with your own weapon. This is serious stuff to think about. Safety first.
Thanks for the input, Alex. Okay, let me pose it another way. Assuming I'm not Quick Draw McGraw and the weapon is holstered, what do you think is a good 'average' distance to be able to shoot assuming an 'average' guy is making a sprint towards you? It's not 50 yards, it's not 2 yards. Where in between do you think is a good distance to practice?

I just got an A-Zoom snap cap, so I'll be doing a lot more dry-fire practicing. Was reluctant to do so before b/c of the theoretical damage to the FP (even though some say it doesn't damage it in newer firearms. But why take the chance?).
