CHP states that people were driving too fast for the conditions, and that along with the wet roads and decreased visibility created this mess! I also concur that it was AMAZING that nobody was killed!

Wow, those cars had to be going in excess of 25MPH, and I love how they all go flying during the crash sequence!!! Nice find John, or do you watch CHiPs online all the time??

Those cars were reall moving weren't they!! Luckily John was entering the highway just as the pileup started. Seems like there was a pileup in every episode.

PS. Like all of my 70's/80's favorites, I watch them on DVD.

I lived up there in the high desert area. The one before this one was a 100 cars pileups if i remembered correctly. Every few years we will get a large pileups. The Cajon pass is the only major route that connects us to down the hill. If you are going to Vegas from southern california, most likely have gone up through the cajon pass I-15 freeway. For the 20 years i lived in the area...the I-15 is considered one if not the top most dangerous interstates. It is notorious for fatal accidents--usually falling asleep coming from Vegas and high speed rollovers with carpools. There is a particular 125 miles desert stretch of I-15 that dateline reported 173 fatalities in a 5 years period. The adjacent two lane highways especially "deathtrap" highway 138 and 395 in the area are very dangerous too--mostly headon collisions.
