England have a great team (so we're always being told), despite having a player who is not good enough to be 1st choice for a second rate domestic club. But bound to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!!. No doubt will lose on penaltys in the latter stages, it always ends in tears... Germany are bound to go all the way while never looking that convincing, ruthless efficiency. Brazil all hype, got no chance.
Grenade thrown, wait for the explosion!!

What do you want to say about them?

6-0 win against S&M? What do you think of that game?

Can someone tell me exactly what they did with the ball. It seems to be a lot of discussion, but could not nail it down. All, I know is that the Goal keepers seem to hate it, and the field players like it.

Guess I hate it.

I recorded the US game, but don't think I will watch it now. The T&T vs Sweden was interesting to watch. T&T did good with only 10 players. Hislop had some great saves.
Apprently the world cup footballs cost about ?600 each.

There was a piece on them on radio 4 which interviewed materials scientists etc. What they were saying is that a standard ball is not completely spherical. Instead it's made up of a series of 'plates'.

The 'pattern' of the balls surface affects it's aerodynamics and for a straight kick with no spin some patterns make a ball's behaviour more linear and predictable.

The world cup balls have fewer panels than any other ball, but the ball is also more spherical than any other ball. If you look at the ball you can see the large, very strangely shaped panels as opposed to a traditional ball with many more hexagonal panels.

Apparently, the smoother more spherical surface means that the ball will be slightly less predictable in flight, but for players who put spin on the ball (e.g. beckham) it will be MUCH more accurate.

So good for spin, less good for the 'long ball' game.

Anyway - England are through so I'm going to relax for a bit - all the talk is about whether we play the yellow carded players (and risk them for the next round) and whether we should try to avoid playing Germany. Having said which Ecuador look pretty handy so it could be tough either way.

Assume you all saw the USA / Italy game & the ghana / chzech match - that groups wide open still !

This is a cool link for the latest position:

Just 'mouse' over the flags to see whose who.

Maybe it's as much as you say for a ball used in a match...

I am kinda surprise since their lineup is not star studded, but you know a good team doesn't neccessary make up of all-star. All you need is someone like Riquelme who can do some good pass.
