It's more confounding than choosing a car to buy! With the Canon 40D, it was easy... The Nikon D80 wasn't that great and the D300 was over US$2000 at the time, so those two were ruled out. The 40D was the obvious choice. Now... all the Canons and Nikons are so good that the whole decision making process has been complicated.

No stock until next late week... So much agonizing over a camera! I can't believe it myself!

David,

Like you said earlier, it's about the guy behind the camera. If you look past the technobabble, and break the decision down, it really is only a tool to capture the mind's eye. There are lots of nice pics on this site that were probably shot with P&S cameras, yet the composition is such that it makes you look twice.

Speaking as a layperson, you don't need the latest and greatest to take interesting shots. Some of my favorites came out of an old Canon 10D with the first gen DIGIC:

10D sample 1

10D sample 2

That being said, it sure helps to have more tools in your bag to make the shot happen.

Hey...part of the fun is shopping

As many pros often say, "It's not the camera, but the person using the camera!" Whether I use a Nikon D90, Canon 50D, a Canon 5D Mark II, or a Canon 1Ds Mark IV... I think my pictures will look probably the same, mediocre!
yep that what I say with my 3dmax software.

How about prime lenses? I shot these with my 135mm/f2 L.

I think a big factor is ease of use and comfort. If you liked the way the 40D felt and worked, the 50D may be the better choice.

I am very comfortable with the Nikon interface for the D200 and would find it difficult to switch to a Canon.

Great pics all, BTW. Canon does have colors that pop right out of the box. Nikon defaults are more subtle, at least on the high end and expect the user to do PP to sharpen and "pop" it. Although, I normally default to "vivid" for my jpg settings.

Some more great shots Alex!

I've narrowed it down to two cameras by using the logic you prescribed above, but the choice still isn't an easy one! Both cameras have their own merits, which further clouds the decision. And yes... the fun part is shopping trying out the cameras! I think a major part of the hesitation comes from the fact that, although I am leaning towards the Canon (because that is what happily I used until recently), a part of me is thinking, "This may be the opportunity to try Nikon." But if I go the Nikon route, I'll be heavily committed because of the investment in lenses and accessories. Oh dear... another point to debate over! Anyhow... the shopping part of it is fun!

Yes... You win on some points and lose on others. Unless I spend thousands more to get at 1Ds Mark III or a D3! And no... I'm not considering either cameras at this point!
