My $0.02 on driving in Europe: I drove in Sicily for two weeks back in May of this year, and have previously driven in the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, (going way back).? On balance I think Europeans are better drivers than Americans because they are consistent/predictable, the obey some common-sense and courteous conventions, and they pay attention. Stay out of the passing lane if there is more than one lane, unless you're passing, and make it quick. I second other comments about seizing the moment, not hesitating, but that doesn't mean you can't let someone in from a side road or slow down for a pedestrian.? It's very bad form to hit one. Obey the priority in roundabouts. And you probably don't want to spend much time driving on trips within a city. You can walk across Florence easily, a lot of the central city is closed to traffic, and it's not easy to park anywhere near where you want to be.? Good luck, have fun, you're in one of the most beautiful parts of a beautiful country, and you will enjoy driving out of town onto country roads.

it is legal and you do not need to register for such a short period of time
you will maybe need to pay for local driving insurance which is given by law and it is no big bucks
I see US spec cars with US licence plates to drive around every so often
around here.
I think the limit without any local registration and licence plates is up to 6 months. So you will simply just a turist driving by
however are you sure you want to pay for the shipping to Europe and back only for 4 months? Also driving in Italy and specialy big cities is crazy with no rules and I would be afraid that your bumper will get hit .....
Maybe a local longterm rental is a way to go.....

Can i just say, florence is a really nice city. the traffic is pretty messy though and would not recommend taking your own car; your nerves will be shot by the end of your trip. public transport is best. Driving as an italian in florence would be fun i think! especially in one of the smart cars which are everywhere, as are the lethal scooters!!!!
enjoy your trip
enjoy your trip

Dont listen to anyone, take your 545 with you. It doesnt cost too much, about $1000.00 each way. Rentals will cost more. I have been to Athens Greece about 20 times, and they drive very agressive, but in a good way. They all drive the same way. Driving in the states, the majority of people drive like slow un-responsive zombies, and the rest drive like we do with our BMWs. It only takes a couple of days to get into the driving spirit, and then its great!!!

I think you will enjoy a lot that experience.
The trafic is not bad, take care to scooters and parking (bumpers will suffer).
I drove in Manhattan, before 11 sept, and my worse nightmare was to find a parking along street, the other covered park costs big money.
The speed limit in "Autostrada" is 130 km/h.
If you go up to 40 km/h more (<170 Km/h) the fine, if captured, will be 180 euro and 2 point on license (for italians).
More than 40 km/h (>170 Km/h) roughly 350 euro 10 points and driving license suspended for a certain period.
Notwithstanding all I suggest to bring your car with you and enjoy the ride.
If you will need further specific information please feel free to ask.
