free mp3 upgrade doesn't even apply to the uk

update, so i received a phone call from the dealer SA, he said when they try to re-code the headunit, it yielded some error code, so they are gonna replace the whole headunit under warranty and it will be able to play MP3 , sweet

Hey guys,

just got my car back from the dealer.

so here is the story, my car is 06 525i, production date Jan 1st, 2006, it cannot play mp3 disc.

and i read this thread from fellow e60er that car can be re-programmed to have it play mp3 disc under warranty, i took the print-out sheet to the dealer, but the dealer refuse to do it for free, because it says it will only cover e60 5s up until 09/2005, so my car doesn't qualify. Fine, I said go ahead I will pay for the re-program.

Then few hours after I left dealer, the dealer called me said when they try to re-code/update the headunit, it yields error code, so they are gonna replace the headunit under warranty. I was like: sweet.

Then now it's the funny part, the dealer SA called me again today said that BMW Canada refused to warranty, because mp3 is not supported until March 06, so basically they cannot replace the headunit under warranty nor be able to re-program it.....

I think it doesnt make sense logically, e60s up until September 05 can have software upgrade to play mp3 ( which is older than my car), and car after March/06 have mp3 ability out of factory. So cars from Spet 2005 to March 2006 can neither get a software upgrade nor a replacement headunit...

does anyone else sense bullshit here??

Tell Them that you want the headunit replaced under warranty AND also want the latest software upgrade (as this will be required anyway for the headunit)

Its not the headunit that plays the software, its the idrive software capability. Thats why it needs to be version 20 or above. the SIB bulletin states Start of production to sept 05. Cars built after that should have the latest sofware that plays mp3s anyway.

The link will prove that your stereo and that your car is MP3 compatible. It should all be able to be done under warranty.

Print this SIB out - This SIB states that it can be done from SOP (start of productions, which was 2003) so they should do it for you and there is a deffect code on there.

You must have produced the SIB from Jan 2006. This one below is from March 2006 and is therelevant one.

It shows that a software upgrade would enabkle the MP3s to be played. I have just had this done on my 530i M sport in UK

SITUATION
The MP3 option is not available in the audio menu. When an MP3 CD is used, it is not recognized as a valid CD.
CAUSE
The stability of earlier CCC (Car Communication Computer) software did not allow for proper MP3 functionality.
PROCEDURE
1. On a customer complaint basis only, retrofit MP3 functionality using Progman V20.00 or higher.
2. Refer to the SI B09 05 01 Coding, Individualization, Programming (CIP), for the "Retrofit" procedure.
3. Select "MP3" from the retrofit list and follow the on screen instructions for retrofitting MP3 capability.
4. The service code "KMP3" will be added to the end of the vehicle order as displayed in the Measures Plan.
5. After the procedure is complete, turn the ignition off and wait 5 minutes or until the driver's switch block LED
goes out. Check the functionality of the system.

Sorry to ressurect this, but I would like to get the MP3 recode before buying a dension gateway 500, I printed the info out and am awaiting a return call from Sytner Coventry. Exactly how did you approach the subject with the dealer to get it doen on extended warranty?

I just told them that my car did not play MP3-CD's for some reason, and politely asked them to check the service bulletin on the Retrofit.
But not sure how it works on the extended warranty.

I have a 2007 530i (E60) with the NAV pack and you can play MP3 files on the CD in the dashboard. Haven't tried the stacker yet but apparently it WON'T play MP3 through the stacker.

My Car is strange, I had a software update and my CD player will not play mp3 but my DVD player plays everything I throw at it MP3, CDs except DVD Movies, I guess if I have a mp3 video it will play it.
Any Idea what is wrong with my CD player?
My CD player will not play CDs either but the BMW Specialist that did the software update for me said there is nothing wrong with my CD player
I get "NO SUPPORTED AND READABLE AUDIO MEDIUM FOUND IN THE INTERNAL DRIVE"
