What's the point of adaptive dampers if I already have VDC?

What's the point of adaptive dampers if I already have VDC?
I have adaptive dampers and variable damper control - I assume the latter is when I am able to adjust dampers using the Comfort/Normal/Sport/Sport+ switch? So does Adaptive Dampers automatically switch between these settings? If so, under what circumstances and can this be turned on/off?
