wow, so what's to stop someone from buying an F10 550i and just tuning the crap out of it over purchasing the F10 M5?

*just playing devil's advocate here...
its not devils advocate, youre 100% right and this is m's big dilemma. There will no longer be any vast difference in what is offered in the m version the non-M models. the new 550/650s will have a TTV8, like in the new 750, but soon enough will get a bump in power as the engine is already a few years old and will be near refresh time by the time the new 6er comes out for sure...bottom line, m is killing themselves as we all know, you'll be able to get a 550, tune it to near M performance if not more for a vastly smaller amount of $$$s vs the all out purchase of the M

to ECF, shame on you for not knowin about the TTV12, the did announce it long ago, so it wasnt much of a suprise (they DO have Rolls to thank though, as it would not have made it if not for the status is affords)

I'll accept a TTV10 based on the S85, or I wont buy the next M6 or M5, no thanks i will not subsidize the TTV8 at m levels, id just buy the non M and be done with it

An M car is more than just the engine. What's to stop you from tuning your 535 to have the same power of the current M5?
true, except when you have an X in front of it!!

manual transmission - NOPE
fire breathing Natural Aspiration- NOPE
Cross drilled rotots - NOPE

bloated fat pigs - BINGO!!

...there are tunes out there that can make a 535 compete with the M5 today

just like there are tunes that make the 335 beat the M3, thats what turbos can do and why they do not belong in the Ms

The BMW engineers are not dumb.... the normal TT V8 will not have LSD and many other M parts (the parts might be fully sealed that the tuners wouldn't tune them).

A similar case for the 335i (after march 2008), they sealed the differential that means it will not allow to install LSD because they know it will beat the M3 on the track.

Guess I should have been more clearer in my comment. People were surprised BMW put a TT V12 in the 760 since the TT V8 in the 750 seemed like more than enough....at least from what I've read.

only playing you know!!

i think that BMW just needed to offer something like MB does in the stratosphere with this engine, it goes against all is says is its new global green strategy, though we know that green means $$$ and not environment!

I highly doubt anything will be "completely sealed". I'm sure it will just take some time to crack....

Back to the original subject.

Based on the info I have from various sources, the E60 will go out of production in December this year. The F10 will reach the dealers in March and the F11 in September-October 2010. This is for Europe at least.

The new M5 have been tested on the Neuburg ring for some time now, so based on that it is not unlikely that it will be ready and released during next year.

for giggles, i called my dealer to see if he had heard anything about the release of the next m5. he said that the last they heard it would be 4th quarter 2012.

i doubt that...
