I feel sorry for you guys. As our E61 is the main car in our family and the 120dM is my wifes car, we simply can't have a 5 series sedan. My lease is up in June and I am seriously considering an extension to be able to order the F11 in the fall.

Since BMW no longer reports 5 wagon sales separately, we don't really know how many they sold in 2009. I've read anywhere from 500 to 1000; at 500 the E61 wagon might be more rare than some exotics like the Lamborghini! If anyone come across the exact (or even ball park) number, please report!
This is as good as I could find- Martin Birkmann (manager of product and price planning at BMW NA) said only 395 sold through the first six months of 2009. Sales peak was 2005, with 2351 sold.

My wild-assed guess- another 500 sold in the last six months of 2009, for a total of 895.

Woow! there's still hope then!
If we can figure out a way to make people boycott the GT, maybe we'll get the F11 in the US!

Well, compared to the X6 the GT5 looks a bit anorectic I think.

Looks like this 2010 wagon will be last BMW we buy. Perhaps the last gasoline car for that matter. The 5GT (otherwise known as the "7 hatchback") might have the latest cool toys, but is too heavy and the hatch too complicated. And we can't stand the SUVs/Crossovers. Weight and MPG penalties without any corresponding increase in versatility or practicality. The 5 wagon is just about right. Our dream car would be 535d, 5 wagon versatility and handling and >30 mpg. Oh well.
Now THAT would be awesome. With a manual tranny, would be epic - a car that would be fun, could drive for 15 years and probably get 35+ on the highway.

It's too bad that our EPA can't see fit to certifying cars differently than having every single body style iteration go through the same battery of driveline tests. It makes things incredibly expensive for manufacturers. I don't want BMW losing money on cars they sell, but I do think they are turning people off as much as they are getting new folks to switch or consider the brand by developing these crazy concepts like the X6 and the GT, both of which are absurdly heavy. Re: the E61, I don't think they only sold 400 units because that was the demand, more that 400 was the allocation. Of course they certainly could have sold a lot more if they dropped the 528i engine in there, lost the standard 4wd and charged something like a $3-4k premium over the baseline 528i.

I guess it's notl a surprise. The U.S. after all has been SUV country, and for BMW to import European made wagons while the U.S. made SUVs could sell more for better profit, it's something that you'd expect.

I would have got a 528iT had it existed in the U.S. the 535xiT is a bit overkill for some of the perspective wagon buyers. 528iT or 528xiT or 535iT would have sold a lot more for BMW.

Well, at least there's still Audi A6 Avant that one could get. The supercharged V6 seems quite good from the reviews that I have seen. A premium plus A6 with sport and cold weather packages runs 56K, not too bad I'd say (Navigation included).

I guessed 895 but it was a little less:

"Other news is that we will not be getting the new BMW 535xi Sport Wagon when it launches in Europe at the end of 2010; reason being that 2009 saw just 878 Americans buy the current version. " (Edmunds Inside Line)

LOL....i agree. The resemblance to the ill-fated Pontiac Aztek (2001 to 2005) is uncanny. I predict the GT will be flop. The GT was designed 5 years ago when SUVs were all the rage and BMW didn't have the courage to cancel it now. Fuel prices and the economy have spelled the end of bloated heavy cars (IMHO); especially for the US market where we will not get the diesel versions (just the thirsty 550 and only slightly less thirsty 335).
