Vishwen - did your 545i behave exactly the same in that the problem would appear only after approx an hour of driving? I called the dealer today and he asked me to see if I can reliably replicate the problem. Once I can do this I should come straight in and they will deal with it.
Pukka asked whats the big deal? - as Melor says it is a big deal to me also. Leaving all the hassle aside of scheduling in the dealer visit I also prefer when expensive things like this work as they should. Furthermore I really don't like the prospect of having the dash taken out for remedial work. When it's put back together you usually pick up some rattles and squeaks that will warrant another trip to the dealer.

do one thing whn the Idrive blinks put your wiper on to see if the speed is slow or normal .
if it is slow then no doubt it is alternator
